Digitalisation
Digital transformation has emerged as a fundamental phenomenon
Digital transformation has emerged as a fundamental phenomenon that has redefined the way societies, businesses and governments operate around the world, and Europe has been no exception to this technological revolution. Over the last decade, Europe has experienced a significant impact due to the massive adoption of digital technologies in various sectors and this is reflected in major European policies and funding programmes at both national and European level, which have been designed to help Europe’s citizens to take advantage of the digital revolution.Â
Digital transformation in Europe will make it possible to harness digital technologies not only to ensure an optimal flow of information, but also to drive innovation, competitiveness and social progress. Key aspects of this transition include digital innovation, improving digital infrastructures, fostering a data-driven economy, enhancing digital skills and capabilities, and strengthening Europe’s autonomy and leadership in global digital standards.
New challenges in the digital area
Europe needs to continue to drive forward the twin green and digital transitions of recent years, encompassing social, technological, environmental, economic and political aspects in a cross-cutting manner. To this end, an imperative condition is a greater commitment by society to instigate the necessary changes that are indispensable for achieving these transitions.
Sectors such as the cloud, where large companies from third countries account for the lion’s share of the market, highlight the need to invest in and promote the transfer of European knowledge to the market. In this sense, public support in the form of technological investment and the promotion of European R&D&I is one of the main keys to developing Europe’s own technologies that will enable us to guarantee our autonomy and digital independence with respect to third countries while at the same time strengthening the competitiveness of our business fabric.
